What You Weren’t Told About Postpartum Recovery, But Should Have Been

There’s no manual for postpartum recovery. You get a stack of discharge papers, a follow-up in six weeks, and somewhere in between you’re supposed to “just bounce back.”

But here’s the thing: most people don’t bounce.
They leak.
They ache.
They feel weak in places they didn’t even know had muscles.

That’s not failure.
That’s your body asking for support.

As a pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist, I work with women in all stages of postpartum. Some are six weeks out. Some are six years out. Real recovery doesn’t happen by accident. It happens by intention.

And no one talks about it.

Why? Because we’ve normalized suffering.

People are told:

  • “It’s just part of being a mom.”
  • “You had a baby. Of course your back hurts.”
  • “Don’t worry, leaking is normal.”

Nope.
It’s common. Not normal.

There’s a difference. And that difference matters.

Most of the women I treat come in thinking they’re broken.
They leave realizing they were just under-rehabbed. Their muscles weren’t trained. Their tissue wasn’t supported. Their nervous system wasn’t re-coordinated.

None of this is their fault.
But it is treatable.

What does postpartum pelvic floor therapy actually do?

Here’s what we actually work on in the clinic – no smoke and mirrors

  • Reconnect you with your core
Not just sit-ups. Not just breathing. Real coordination between your abs, back, and pelvic floor.
  • Treat urinary leakage
With running, sneezing, jumping, or laughing. No pads required.
  • Improve pain with intimacy
(Yes, that too. You’re not alone.)
  • Reduce prolapse symptoms
Including the pressure, heaviness, or bulging feeling that no one warned you about.
  • Address back, hip, or tailbone pain
It’s all connected. If you’re limping or guarding how you move, your pelvic floor is likely compensating.
  • Support cesarean recovery
Scar mobility, abdominal support, and strength to lift your baby, your groceries, and your life.

Can you come in even if it’s been years?

Yes.
There’s no expiration date on care.

Some of my favorite patient stories come from women who finally prioritized themselves years later – and saw major change. It’s not too late.

The bottom line:

You gave birth. That’s a big deal.
Your body deserves real recovery – not a shrug and a six-week green light.
You can feel strong again. You can move confidently again. You can feel like yourself again.

I’ve worked with women from every walk of life.
After one baby or three. After sex that never felt the same again. Whether they stayed at home or worked 12-hour days. Teachers, athletes, cashiers, CEOs – they all have something in common.

Everyone has a pelvic floor.
Everyone gets pregnant differently.
Everyone develops weakness somewhere.
Everyone gets some drama along the way.
And everyone deserves rehab.

I wish this country gave more importance to the women doing everything at home and everything around them.
There’s a huge gap in care – and I’m here to fill it.
